I am aiming to raise money for Bowel Cancer Australia by giving up alcohol for the month of July! Bowel cancer is something that has hugely impacted my family in the past year. My mum was diagnosed with stage 4 terminal cancer at the age of only 41, this was caused by a rare and hereditary bowel disease called Familial Adenomatous Polyposis (FAP). She is currently receiving palliative chemotherapy and we are remaining hopeful and positive that this treatment will keep her going for long enough to see new treatments become available that may extend her life further. As the bowel disease is hereditary, I was also diagnosed with FAP. I was fortunate enough to receive surgery to reduce my risk of cancer. After surgery I was told that some polyps had started turning into cancer and if I had not got seen to I would've had a cancer diagnosis within 6 months (aged 21) and if I had waited 2years I would've been facing a similar diagnosis to my mum's. Bowel cancer does not discriminate on age, sex, race, etc. My goal is not only to raise much needed funds for Australia's second largest cancer killer, but also to raise awareness in hope that people will get checked out and hopefully receive good news or an early and treatable diagnosis.
